The midbrain is basically the interior of the brain. Aside from the limbic system, I have also decided to place the basal ganglia in this section. Information on the basal ganglia can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. Below are the names and functions of several structures within the limbic system.

Structure Name: Function/Application:
Hippocampus Involved in recognition of new objects, memory, inhibitory learning and decision making.

The hippocampus allows you to remember how to drive and which directions and routes will get you to your destination the fastest. You remember this one time you were in a hurry, and you were going over 70 mph. In the end, you get a $50 fine. Because you recall this situation, you decide to stay on the safe side and drive well under the speed limit.

>> M O R E INFO

Corpus Collosum Connects the two hemispheres of the brain so that neural messages can flow freely between them.
Septum A thin wall or membrane that divides two chambers.
Fornix An axon tract that interconnects the hypothalamus and the hippocampus.
Mamillary body Contain some hypothalamic nuclei; hypothalamus regulates emotions, body temperature, sexual activity and food and water intake.
Cingulate gyrus Provides an interface between the decision making processes of the frontal lobes, the emotional functions of the amygdala and the brain mechanisms for controlling movement. Plays excitatory role in emotions and in motivated behavior.
