historical -World?  World's all about alchemy.  The combination of the four elements to make shiny happy gold originally - which was equated at the time to perfect matter.  How that mutated into some naked chick I'm not sure, but she seems to represent the generic pagan earth-mother. 

card - Much like the similarly celestial Star, World's one of those annoying ambiguous cards.  It usually corresponds to some sort of completion or unity... but wether that's good or bad is really up in the air. Mostly because it can represent both fun happy systems, and "workin' for the man" conspiracy-theory type evil corporation systems. 

world meaning - Completion.  Synthesis.  Prize or reward for completing a task.  The perfect or absolute.  A complete System. Perfection.

world reversed meaning - Bad consequences of completing a task.  Stagnation of a system.  Delay.  Completion of malicious or pointless work.
